Eight new Kāinga Ora houses in Stoke are ready for families to move into, marking the first stage of a wider rebuild programme replacing ageing homes across the suburb.
The Orchard St development has replaced four ageing properties with eight modern two-bedroom homes designed to better meet the needs of local whānau.
Construction is also underway on Karaka St, where 12 new homes are due to be finished by the middle of the year. The site includes a mix of two and three-bedroom homes, along with one five-bedroom house.
Six two-bedroom homes are also being built on nearby Kauri St, and the three projects together will deliver 26 new social homes in the coming months.
Kāinga Ora regional director for Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast, Julie Campbell, says the new homes will give tenants warm, dry and healthy places to live that meet their needs now and into the future.
Julie says the organisation is pleased to continue its strong relationship with the local community, including Te Korowai Manaakitanga Trust, which manages Tuia te Hāpori, the community hub on the corner of Orchard St.
The homes will be offered to families on the Ministry of Social Development’s Housing Register.
Julia says they are looking forward to handing over the keys to the new Orchard St homes.
“Each family that moves in will have a housing support manager who will help them settle in and connect with the community.”
