Danny has queried what the story is with a rumoured cell tower being constructed on High Street, just in front of Motueka’s NPD petrol station.
The rumours are true, Danny.
The incoming 21m tower is a 2degrees initiative and is being built by Connexa, which describes itself as New Zealand’s “leading mobile tower infrastructure company”. Connexa says mobile network demand in Motueka continues to grow, with additional network infrastructure needed to ensure performance.
“Mobile connectivity is critical infrastructure, essential for communication, emergency
response, education, and remote work. As Motueka continues to grow and welcome visitor
numbers, network demand increases, 2degrees identified this area as requiring an upgrade to
avoid potential disruptions to mobile service, especially during peak seasons.”
Resource consent was granted on 21 January 2026, and construction is due to be completed by the end of March.
The site is located on the grass berm on the legal road reserve next to 485 High Street. Connexa says that choosing the location for a cell site is complex. “We follow a robust process, and this location delivers the best connectivity outcomes for Motueka.”
The tower will host 4G and 5G antennae, and the company says all equipment will fully comply with all New Zealand regulatory standards. These include NZS 2772.1:1999, which is New Zealand’s radiofrequency exposure standard, as well as the radiofrequency rules for the National Environmental Standards for Telecommunication Facilities.
Connexa says the site is “co-locatable”, which means it can be utilised by other providers in the future.
“In addition, we are working on upgrades and improvements to connectivity at several sites across the district.”
