A Nelson cricket talent is preparing to take his game to the next level overseas.
Wakatu off spinning all-rounder Dallas Kelso is heading to England to play in the South Staffordshire Premier League for Brewood Cricket Club, thanks to a connection made through Nelson College last year.

The 17-year-old played for the College First XI until finishing Year 13 at the end of 2025, and during his time there formed a strong friendship with the school’s overseas professional, James Clark.
“Brewood is James’ club, and he works with the club captain. The original overseas professional they had signed up fell through, so James contacted me to ask if I’d be interested.”
Dallas was not actively looking to play overseas, but says there were too many positives to ignore.
“I was looking at going to university, but the offer just seemed too good to say no – play more cricket, go overseas, stay with cricketing people, and make some money as well.”
As part of the deal, Dallas will also serve as one of the groundsmen at Brewood’s home oval, as well as coach two of the club’s junior teams. He has coached junior sides at Wakatu and Nelson College, but groundsman duties will be a new challenge.
“I’m looking forward to learning and working under the head groundsman; I love everything about cricket so it will be fun to see how it works.”
This season has been a breakthrough for Dallas, culminating in his debut for the Nelson men’s senior side in all three formats. Nelson Griffins coach Sean Neal says he is eager to see the young spinner continue to develop his game overseas.
“What’s striking about Dallas is how level headed and confident he is for a young spinner. His maturity allows him to process his game on the fly, focusing on the controllables and not allowing external distractions.”
Sean says overseas experience can only strengthen Dallas’ skills.
“When he gets back, I’m looking forward to seeing him push further through the Central Districts system. Maybe Nelson has its next first-class spinner.”
