Every shade of orange transformed Appleby School last week as pupils dressed up for a fundraising and awareness day to support World Kidney Day.
Acting principal Janine Higgins says the Kidney Kids NZ fundraiser is one of several chosen for the year as several students have health issues related to their kidneys. Part of the day included a kidney-themed quiz aimed at raising awareness about how the organs work.
“The kids are always interested in their bodies and how their bodies work,” she says. “One came up to me and said, ‘Kidneys are the washing machine of the body’.”
One in 10 people worldwide have kidney disease. In New Zealand, orange is the colour of Kidney Kids NZ, chosen to brighten the kidney journey for children. The charity’s aim is to help children with kidney and urinary tract conditions - and their families - live their best lives.
