The devices are used in cases of cardiac arrest to restore a normal heartbeat and potentially save lives.
Earlier this month, the Kaiteriteri Heartbeat Project held a movie fundraiser at Motueka’s State Cinema, which drew 82 people. The group says the event was an incredible success, with ticket sales and donations providing five years of breathing room for maintenance and repairs, and possibly even the addition of another AED.
“To every supporter, attendee, volunteer, and especially our incredible sponsors and organisers, (you know who you are) - thank you,” they said. “You’ve helped achieve something truly special of the safety and well-being of Kaiteri.”
A spokesperson told The Guardian the AEDs are available for everyone, including visiting locals and tourists. She says, having a network of trained locals provides an added layer of safety. An AED training session will be held at Kimi Ora in the near future, with details to be published in an upcoming edition of The Guardian once dates are confirmed.
