It is not unusual for sports clubs to call themselves the best in the country, but for the Nelson Squash Club that claim has just been made official.
At the recent Squash New Zealand annual awards, the club was named national Club of the Year. It is the first time a club from the Top of the South has earned the honour, and club secretary Tim Malcolm says everyone is thrilled.
“The awards were held in Christchurch on 7 March. We were invited to attend because we won Canterbury club of the year. All districts had winners, which made up the final group. So, we knew we were in the running, but not that we were the winners until our name was read out. It was incredible,” Tim says.
Judging for the award covers all aspects of a club’s performance for the year. Nelson Squash Club stood out through its participation growth, increased membership and community engagement. Judges also recognised the club’s facility upgrades, new technology initiatives and strong financial footing, along with its collaboration with other local clubs, Squash Canterbury and Squash New Zealand.
Tim says the best part of the national recognition is what it means for the people behind the scenes.
“We’re all volunteers and give our time because we love the sport. We couldn’t have won if it wasn’t for everyone involved who gave their time last year. Being recognised for that hard work is the coolest part.”
The win is a boost for the club’s 300 members as they move into a busy 2026. Alongside club and regional events, Tim says the next generation of players is a priority.
“We’re putting a focus on our junior programme, getting kids into the game and providing them the opportunity to grow their skills.”
