A local charity is calling for Easter egg donations to bring a touch of magic to children in families doing it tough.
Helping Families Nelson is working with The Warehouse in Richmond and Nelson, plus New World supermarkets in Stoke and Motueka, where collection bins have been set up for customers to donate Easter eggs and other treats.
The charity’s manager Katrina Eyles says it’s not about giving treats, but about closing the gap for families who can’t afford them at a time when many other children are enjoying them.
“Like Christmas, it’s not essential, but it’s nice to be able to celebrate it and have those gifts. We’re just trying to ease financial pressure for people doing it tough - and keeping the magic alive when the parents aren’t able to do that.”
Katrina says people often don’t understand the impact on children who see or hear what other children have received at times such as Easter or Christmas. Likewise, the impact on parents who cannot give those treats.
“Seeing the joy and excitement on their children’s faces - it only needs to be the smallest thing to make a difference.”
She says the donations will be distributed within the communities where they are collected, and only to families referred by community agencies and groups. Those needing support can contact an agency to be considered.
