Vintage tractors, steam engines, kids’ rides and country hospitality were in fine fettle at the weekend’s Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Show.
Up to 700 people, young and old, rolled into Higgins Heritage Park up Pigeon Valley over the two‑day event, which was well‑oiled by the hard work of more than 80 members of the Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club.
Secretary Stephen Caunter said the public’s response to the “boys and their toys” showcase - which included the Transport and Steam Museums - as well as the funds raised to ensure the park and its history doesn’t run on empty, made the event a smooth operation.
“You've got all of the kids exposed to old machinery, they're having a great time running around and going on honey train rides, traction engine rides, the Tapawera school bus ride and the bush railway jigger ride,” he said.
“You've got mums and dads, too. One lady yesterday said, ‘I only came out just to bring the little ones, but I've had such a great time as well’, so that’s a real measure of success.
“And we've got all of our club members out as well - they’re having a good time and there’s a fair amount of yarning going on.”
