Doctor Dolittle Jr at Theatre Royal Nelson, Saturday 4 April, by Nelson Youth Theatre. Reviewed by Emma Biggam.
It was a pleasure to review the opening matinee performance of Nelson Youth Theatre’s latest production, Doctor Dolittle Jr. From the very first number, the stage burst to life with vibrant, colourful costumes that immediately set the tone for this energetic and engaging show. The quirky story follows the eccentric Doctor Dolittle, played brilliantly by Billy O’Connor, whose ability to communicate with animals leads him on a delightful and adventurous journey.
As always, Nelson Youth Theatre excels in bringing productions to life through vibrant costuming. The parrot, hedgehog, and Pushmi Pullyu (the two-headed llama) were intricately detailed and visually stunning, adding a real sense of magic to the performance. Lighting and projections enhanced the storytelling beautifully, particularly during the boat and storm scene which was atmospheric and dramatic.
Katarina Salcin-Watts did an incredible job not only as director and choreographer, but also stepping into Emma Fairfax’s role, delivering powerful solos with an impressive vocal performance. “Fabulous Places” was a standout moment of the show. Noi Self shone as Madeline Mugg, confidently maintaining an Irish accent and delivering her songs with clarity and charm.
Other standout performances included Bailey Packer as Polynesia the parrot, whose comedic timing was spot-on; Oliver Genery, who brought great expression and character to Albert Blossom; and Charlotte Wright as Straight Arrow, whose beautiful voice delivering her solo helped make ‘Save the animals’ another standout moment in the show.
Every member of the cast should be immensely proud of their contribution to bringing this story to life. If you are looking for something to do this long weekend, be sure to check out this fun show and support the incredible work of Nelson Youth Theatre, who continue to provide young performers with a place to shine.
