Nelson Golf Club has capped one of the most significant seasons in its history by being named New Zealand Golf Club of the Year at the Golf New Zealand national awards ceremony last week.
The club edged out Arrowtown Golf Club and Pupuke Golf Club for the top honour, with its battle to sustain a long-term future a key factor in the decision.
The past several seasons have been complex, with the board and staff working closely with Nelson Airport and Nelson City Council to survive as an 18-hole championship course after the airport runway extension plan was confirmed.
Golf New Zealand highlighted the scale of the challenge and the club’s response.
“In 2025, Nelson Golf Club exemplified robust governance under pressure. By resolving complex negotiations with the airport authorities, the Board protected the Club's present operations and secured its long-term future. Leveraging this certainty, a forward-thinking, governance-led sustainability strategy, including integration of over 70 community groups, strengthened the Club's financial position, cultural relevance, and value to the community. This blend of decisive governance, visionary leadership, and community engagement stood out as the club grappled with this difficult negotiation.”
The signed airport agreement represents a defining governance achievement in the club’s history. By securing its 18-hole status, Nelson Golf Club protected its ability to operate today and safeguarded its future for generations to come.
General manager Tony Watkins says the recognition reflects the journey the club has been on throughout 2025.
“This is a really proud moment for Nelson Golf Club and for the wider community. It reflects the effort that’s gone in from our members, volunteers, Board and staff, along with the many community groups and charities that are part of the club. It’s great recognition of where we’re at and gives us real confidence as we continue to build for the future.”
Tony says the focus now is on continued growth and improvement.
“The focus now is on continuing to improve and making sure the club keeps delivering for its members and the wider community.”
