For years, the Tasman Great Taste Trail has drawn locals and visitors to explore the region’s stunning landscapes by bike. But behind the scenes, its continued success owes much to the dedication of volunteers like Gillian Wratt and Bill Gilbertson – two steady contributors who are true local legends.
The trail’s story stretches back nearly two decades. The concept of resurrecting biking as a method of transport in the region first began in 2008, when a small group of enthusiasts led by Bill planned a cycle route from Picton through Nelson to Murchison. By 2009, the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust had been formed, and the Great Taste Trail project was officially launched in early 2010. The Trust transformed the concept into something much bigger.
Gillian and Bill are part of the Trust’s nine-strong group of volunteer trustees, continuing to guide the trail’s growth and direction. Both have given countless hours over many years to support and strengthen the trail, from governance and planning through to hands-on involvement.
For Gillian, the reward is in seeing how the trail brings people together. “Seeing families and children out there using it is just great,” she says. “There’s a real sense of community ownership too, with local groups helping plant and beautify the trail.” That connection is what keeps both volunteers motivated. “It’s the freedom cycling gives you and the connection with the outdoors,” says Gillian.
Bill agrees, saying, “Where else can you travel at nature’s pace and connect with people along the way? It’s a different way of experiencing our countryside.” They are quick to acknowledge the wider effort behind the trail. “We couldn’t have done any of it without the support of our trustees and Trail team, local organisations, councils and central government.”
Local Legend is proudly sponsored by the team at Nelson Auto Glass Specialists, celebrating the people who go above and beyond to make our community thrive.
