A new initiative aimed at creating more positive, supportive environments in community sport is rolling out across the Tasman and Nelson region.
Sport Tasman, alongside leading regional sporting codes, has launched the South Island’s first iteration of Positive Vibes Only, a Sport Waikato initiative now being adopted across Aotearoa.
The programme focuses on encouraging uplifting behaviour rather than calling out negativity, supporting tamariki, rangatahi, coaches, referees and umpires, administrators, volunteers and whānau to enjoy sport in environments grounded in respect, encouragement and fun.
By helping people shift their language and behaviour, Positive Vibes Only aims to make positivity the norm on the sideline, on the court, and across all sporting spaces.
“Positive Vibes Only is about ensuring every young person feels valued and supported in their sporting journey,” Roxanna Holdsworth, Play, Active Recreation and Sport Manager at Sport Tasman, says.
“We’re excited to bring the initiative to the region and to work collectively with our codes to build environments where everyone can thrive. This is just the start, and our hope is to see more sports, schools and facilities adopt PVO in the future.”
The launch is a joint effort between Sport Tasman and several members of the newly formed Regional Sport Coalition, including Tasman Rugby Union, Nelson Basketball, Volleyball Tasman, Nelson Netball and Nelson Cricket.
The coalition reflects a shared commitment to improving the sporting experience across the region, with plans for more codes to join in the coming years.
“We’re excited to join Sport Tasman and the Sport Coalition in launching Positive Vibes Only,” Nelson Cricket general manager Jake Inwood says.
“Sport plays an important role in our community, and ensuring it is a fun, supportive environment for our tamariki and rangatahi is critical. PVO aligns perfectly with our mission of delivering enjoyable cricket experiences together.”
Tasman Rugby Union echoes that commitment. Interim chief executive Julie Bensemann says the organisation is proud to partner with other local sports to take a collective approach across the region.
Julie says the collaboration highlights the strength of the region’s sporting community.
“By uniting under a shared kaupapa, we can create lasting change and ensure positivity is at the heart of sport for our tamariki and rangatahi,” she says.
Positive Vibes Only will roll out across the region through shared messaging, signage, coach and volunteer support, and aligned expectations around behaviour.
The goal is to create a culture where positivity is championed and every participant feels welcome and supported.
As the initiative grows, Sport Tasman is encouraging any sport, school or facility interested in being involved to get in touch.
Positive Vibes Only is a behaviour-change initiative designed to promote supportive, encouraging and respectful sporting environments. It provides tools and messaging to help communities champion positive behaviour and reduce negativity in youth sport.
