Aladdin Jr at Theatre Royal Nelson, Thursday 9 April, by Nelson Youth Theatre. Reviewed by Chris Biggam.
Swept away to the famous city of Agribah, the Nelson Youth Theatre got those toes tapping and hands clapping once again. From the opening song, ‘Arabian Nights’, it was clear that musical director Lily-Ellen Martin-Hine set the bar high for the harmonies and singing power of the whole cast.
The glittering costumes, well-made elephant and camel, and a little bit of theatre magic kept the audience entertained from start to finish.
Aladdin, played by Reuben Hart, owned the stage with his charismatic acting and solo singing, setting the scene with ‘Proud of Your Boy’. Matched brilliantly with Evie Dykzeul, who played Jasmine, the duo brought emotion and chemistry to the stage. The two performed ‘A Whole New World’ brilliantly and their connection brought the story to life.
Everyone’s favourite (or maybe that’s a personal opinion), The Genie played by Niamh Walsh stepped up the energy and enthusiasm with her singing of ‘Friend Like Me’. Once again, the behind the scenes support team created incredible costumes, props, and lighting to enhance the experience.
All the things you know and love about this story: the songs, characters and plotline were present, and the directing of Maia Eagle and Joel Sangstar utilised the whole cast to engage the audience.
Use of the entire theatre keeps you on your toes and wondering where the next character will arrive from. This was enhanced by the comedic value of Aladdin’s sidekicks Babkak (Billy O’Connor), Kassim (Jordy Black), and Omar (Makayla Whyte).
Not to be outdone, the mean-old Jafar played by Johnny Dawkins, earned a few boos from the audience. That was comedically balanced by his trusty friend Iago (Tiago Magnoni).
As the finale hit its crescendo, children were dancing in the isles, golden disco balls were spinning, and the whole cast was shimmering on stage…another Nelson Youth Theatre success!
