A heavy rain watch has been issued for Nelson City, with a moderate chance it could be upgraded to a warning.
While the city is avoiding the worst of Cyclone Vaianu, MetService says periods of heavy rain are expected until 9pm on Sunday, with rainfall amounts possibly approaching warning criteria.
No weather watches or warnings have been issued for Tasman areas.
Nelson City Council advises caution when driving, especially around rivers and streams as they could rise.
It also says the wind forecast is expected to pick up later this evening which could cause branch/tree damage.
