World-class musicians will bring the passion and evolution of tango to Motueka later this month when the Aotango Quintet performs at the Motueka Channel Arts Centre.
Presented by the Motueka Music Group in conjunction with Chamber Music New Zealand, the concert features Aotango, an ensemble of leading musicians based in Tāmaki Makaurau who are each accomplished performers in their own right.
The group includes violinist Andrew Beer, concertmaster of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, pianist Lorelle McNaughton, double bassist Gordon Hill, section principal with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, jazz guitarist Sam Swindells and award-winning accordionist Grayson Masefield.
Together, they deliver a seamless fusion of world music and tango, drawing on an eclectic mix of styles shaped by their shared home in Aotearoa.
Performing in Ástor Piazzolla’s original quintet formation, A Century of Tango traces the genre’s development from early classics through to the revolutionary nuevo tango. The programme includes well-known works such as Ángel Villoldo’s El Choclo, Carlos Gardel’s Por una Cabeza and Gerardo Matos Rodríguez’s La Cumparsita, alongside Piazzolla’s groundbreaking compositions.
The concert offers a colourful and engaging evening of live music and an opportunity to support performances in Motueka.
The Aotango Quintet performs on Tuesday, 28 April at 7.30pm at the Motueka Channel Arts Centre.
Tickets cost $25 for adults and $5 for schoolchildren. They are available from Motueka Floral Studio, cash only, or at the door on the night, with cash and EFTPOS accepted.
