Nelson Suburbs’ Southern League season is already on a knife edge after a one win, three losses start to the campaign.
That lone victory, however, offered a glimpse of what Suburbs are capable of. A convincing 4–1 win over Dunedin City Royals over the Easter break showcased the side at its best.
Captain Lennon Whewell was in vintage touch, scoring twice, including a wonder goal that New Zealand football featured as one of its goals of the week. Late strikes from Seb Hickman and Jarvis Vaai in the final 20 minutes put the result beyond doubt.
The following week Suburbs travelled south again to face competition heavyweights Northern AFC. Despite being the better side for much of the contest, they returned home empty-handed after a 2–1 defeat.
The match remained locked until the 77th minute when Lennon put Suburbs ahead, but two late goals from the home side unravelled the visitors’ hard work. Jonny Reynolds was tireless through the middle and was a deserved man of the match for Suburbs.
Suburbs now return to the familiar surrounds of Saxton Field this Sunday, hosting Selwyn United FC, who also sit on one win for the season.
