The Little Mermaid Jr at Theatre Royal Nelson, Wednesday 15 April, by Nelson Youth Theatre. Reviewed by John van Gosliga.
The Little Mermaid is a well-known Disney cartoon with an easily understood storyline, fantastic songs and characters that you will love.
I have just had the privilege of attending this fantastic show performed by Team Amelia. This colourful and entertaining performance was led by Amelia Hall who delivered an enthusiastic Ariel whose voice really shone out.
Amelia’s on stage role was fantastic and kept this fast pace show on track. I loved Ariel’s side kick Flounder, played by Lily Gornall. Lily delivered her lines and singing with clarity and enthusiasm.
Sebastian the crab was played by Lena Knox and kept the story line going with her anxious persona. Luca Syme played the role of Prince Eric and his onstage chemistry with Ariel was the perfect match.
I loved the enthusiasm of the whole cast but did notice when some cast members were not singing to some of the big cast numbers. Possibly some opening night jitters.
Big shout out to Evie Mintrom whose strong singing voice really made Ursula, the sea witch, come alive.
The daughters of King Triton were fantastic, playing various roles throughout the show. King Triton, played by Casey Jenkinson, had great stage presence and delivered her lines clearly and enthusiastically. The rest of the main actors (too many to name) kept the whole show on track.
I need to make a special mention to the hair, make-up and costume crew. The colourful set, wigs and costumes made the whole show come alive.
The near capacity audience was enthusiastic with cheering and booing, and the smiles and clapping at the end of the performance was great to see.
