Nelson Surf Life Saving Club has cleared a major hurdle in plans for a new clubhouse at Tāhunanui Beach, with resource consent now granted for the project.
The approval allows the club to move ahead with the build, replacing its current mix of temporary and shared facilities with a single, purpose-built base.
Club president Noah Hosie says the decision marks an important step forward.
“We’ve been working out of temporary spaces for a long time. This gives us the opportunity to put something in place that properly supports the work we do.”
The club supports beach patrols, along with search and rescue and emergency response operations across the wider Nelson Tasman region.
With consent secured, attention now turns to delivering the project, with fundraising already under way.
“There’s been solid support so far. We’re already well on the way, and now it’s about pushing on with the fundraising and getting the project delivered,” Noah says.
“This is one of the major milestones for us. The next step is raising the funds to get it built.”
The new clubhouse will provide a permanent base for patrols, training and operations, and will also include space that can be used by the wider community.
The club has acknowledged the strong backing from the community, which has helped bring the project to this point.
