A Tasman woman’s hand‑crocheted creations are helping spread comfort and community spirit ahead of the 2026 Westpac Chopper Appeal, which runs throughout May.
After previously crocheting toys to comfort young patients, Susan Settler was inspired to contribute in her own way by creating a collection of small ‘pocket hugs’ in iconic Westpac colours.
Each carefully crafted piece is designed to offer comfort and connection, giving supporters something tangible to hold onto while backing a life‑saving cause.
“These pocket hugs are a beautiful reminder of the care and compassion that exists in our community,” Paula Muddle, general manager of the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust, says. “They represent far more than a donation, they’re a symbol of the human connection behind every rescue mission.”
The 2026 Westpac Chopper Appeal raises vital funds to ensure rescue helicopter services can continue operating 24/7, providing critical care when it matters most.
Donations can be made online as well as in person throughout May at Westpac branches in Motueka, Richmond, Nelson and Blenheim.
Susan’s gesture highlights the many ways people can support the appeal, whether through financial contributions, fundraising efforts or simple acts of kindness that inspire others to give.
“We’re incredibly grateful for this thoughtful contribution. It’s these personal touches that bring the appeal to life and remind us all why we do what we do,” Paula says.
The community is encouraged to get behind the appeal this May to help keep the rescue helicopter flying for those who need it most, and to support the arrival of the Airbus H145 helicopter, due to arrive in the region in June 2026.
