Taylors Contracting Wanderers Community Sports Club is preparing to mark 75 years as a cornerstone of Brightwater life, with a jubilee weekend celebrating sport, friendships and community stretching back generations.
From boots hitting the ground on frosty winter mornings to cricket balls flying through long summer afternoons, Wanderers has long been a place where sport and community grow side by side.
The club was formed in 1951, following the impact of World War II on rural sport, when the Brightwater Pirates and the Wakefield Rovers united to create a single, stronger club. That decision laid the foundations for what would become Taylors Wanderers.
Rugby quickly flourished, with teams progressing through the grades and, by 1960, the club fielding sides down to eighth grade.
Over the decades, Wanderers has grown well beyond rugby and cricket. The club has supported squash and a busy gym, and at various times has offered football, softball, netball and rugby league, reinforcing its role as a true community sporting hub.
On Friday, Wanderers division 2 team took to the field for the Country Cup against Huia wearing the solid gold jersey that players donned from 1966-1992. It was the first time a senior team has taken the field in the gold jersey in 34 years.
Diane Drogemuller, who has been involved with Wanderers for 45 years, first through her time with the Brightwater Tennis Club, says the 75th jubilee is a milestone worth celebrating.
“It’s a great milestone,” she says. “Over the years there have been a lot of sporting achievements across all codes, and the club has been a real centre of the community and surrounding areas.”
Diane says that the jubilee weekend will be about reconnecting as much as reflecting.
“It will be a good time to catch up, share memories, and reflect on the friendships made over generations of families being part of our sporting community.”
She also acknowledges the many people who have supported the club over the years.
“Thanks to everyone who has contributed, both on and off the field, to make this such a great place for all of us.”
Long-time sponsor Taylors Contracting also acknowledged the milestone and its long association with the club.
“Taylors Contracting’s connection to Wanderers started in the 1980’s when the Taylors brothers played for the club as youngsters and later at a senior level. The business’ association as a club sponsor has been in place for nearly 30 years. We congratulate Wanderers for reaching this milestone anniversary and thank them for everything they do for our community.”
Kyle Paki Paki, club chair, says the celebration has been designed to reflect the club’s wide reach.
“It’s an amazing achievement, and I’m pleased to have been part of the Wanderers story,” he says. “Thanks to all the businesses, individuals, and families who have contributed over the years.”
The weekend begins with a relaxed meet and greet on Friday, including grazing platters, drinks and a Walk Down Memory Lane display. Saturday features the formal jubilee dinner, a surprise guest speaker and live music at the afterparty. The celebrations wrap up on Sunday with a free family day recognising juniors, past players and the wider community.
The jubilee weekend will be held from Friday, 14 August, to Sunday, 16 August. Due to club capacity, registrations are now open and will close 31 May, with full details available on the club website. www.wandererssports.co.nz/75th or by emailing jimmy@wandererssports.co.nz
