
Metservice has added a strong wind watch to the Nelson Tasman area on top of rain warnings as parts of Nelson are without power.
Northerly winds may approach severe gale in exposed places between noon and 9pm on Friday. There is a moderate chance of the watch being upgraded to a warning.
A Network Tasman spokesperson says a fallen tree has taken out powerlines feeding a section of Wakapuaka Road, Cable Bay, Teal Valley and Kokoroa leaving the area without power.
"Crews are working on getting a generator up and running this morning to restore supply to most affected properties while the line is repaired. We apologise for the inconvenience this outage will cause."
Maitai Valley Rd is closed from Ralphine Way, with access available to residents.
Nelson Sportsfields are closed with the expectation that they will reopen on Saturday.
Surface flooding has been reported between Nelson and Renwick so cautious driving is advised.
