Motueka High School has stamped its authority on regional badminton, claiming top honours at the Tasman Secondary Schools Championships on home courts last week.
The annual event returned to the Motueka Recreation Centre, where a strong home-town showing helped Motueka High School dominate the field among 26 teams from across the Top of the South.
Motueka’s Senior Boys and Senior Girls both finished the championships ranked number one in the Nelson–Tasman–Marlborough region, underlining the school’s growing reputation as a badminton powerhouse.
The Division 1 Boys and Division 1 Girls both secured first place, while the Division 2 Boys and Division 2 Girls each finished runners-up.
The Motueka Boys team was made up of Ryan Kroupa, Pitthawat Maeangami, Kenneth Manaloto and Robert Vlaming, and throughout the day had four wins and one draw. The Motueka Girls team featured Lexie Burridge, Anjhela Dalluay, Heleene Surbano and Christine Tanggap, and finished the day with three 6-0 wins and two draws, enough to secure the girls’ title.
The Tasman Secondary Schools Championships are a qualification event for the South Island Secondary Schools’ Championships, which will be held in Christchurch in June.
With strong results across multiple divisions, the future of badminton at Motueka High School looks well set.
