Indie Harris may have her head down as she scans the Motueka shoreline for shells, stones and sea glass, but her sights are firmly set on the Gold Coast.
The 11-year-old is working hard to earn spending money for an upcoming family holiday to Australia, crafting bracelets, necklaces, earrings and ornaments from whatever treasures she can find.
Indie sells her jewellery online and at Memorial Hall during her mum Chloe Meegan’s three-times-a-week exercise classes, Tone with Kase and Chlo.
She began making her own jewellery a little over six months ago, with plenty of help from her creative Nannan Nicki. Together, they keep the legacy of Grandad Bill alive by rummaging through his shed for supplies such as washers and copper nails, repurposing them into Indie’s designs.
“I think my favourite thing to make is the copper earrings, because you can do a whole bunch of different combinations with them,” she says.
So far, Indie has sold about 40 items, raising about $400 towards her trip in November. (That tally climbed to 41 after this reporter paid a visit.)
She is constantly replenishing her stock and branching out with new ideas. To browse her creations, pop in during Tone with Kase and Chlo or contact Chloe via Facebook or at chloemeeganx@gmail.com.
