A Motueka doctor has been named as the man who died at Kaiteriteri Beach last week.
Emergency services were called to Kaiteriteri-Sandy Bay Rd just before midday on Thursday after reports of a person unresponsive on the beach.
The family of Dr Martin Hudson say Martin suffered a sudden medical event and it was not a water-related death, as initially reported by police.
"Martin was finishing his regular sea swim at Kaiteriteri Beach when he suddenly collapsed. Sadly, attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful," the family shared.
"It gives us much solace that Martin was out there doing what he loved most when this occurred.
"We know how very much Martin was loved and respected in our community. Both a commemoration event and a memorial website will be established with details to follow."
