Richmond shoppers will have a strong incentive to brave the winter chill this June, with $6000 in cash prizes up for grabs through Richmond Unlimited’s Spend and Win promotion.
The month-long competition is designed to give local businesses a boost during what is traditionally a quieter time of year.
Richmond Unlimited chair Raymond Griffith says June can be a challenging month for retailers, with colder weather and rising costs affecting how and where people choose to shop.
“June is normally a quiet month, it’s the beginning of winter,” Raymond says. “People don’t like to come out, so this is an incentive to come and shop in Richmond.”
He says the promotion also recognises the pressure many households are under.
“We know that fuel is a problem at the moment, and all the inflated prices,” he says. “With this, you can spend $20 in different stores and get multiple entries.”
The Spend and Win competition runs throughout June, with three $500 cash prizes drawn every week. In total, $6000 will be given away.
Board member Belinda de Clercq says the promotion covers almost all Richmond businesses within the central grid.
“Our zone runs from Oxford St across the top, and then down Talbot and McGlashen, and through that whole grid, including Gladstone Rd,” Belinda says. “With the exception of the supermarket, everywhere else is included.”
She says the promotion also extends beyond retail.
“It includes services as well. If you go and see your accountant or use other services and get an invoice, that counts too.”
Entering the draw is designed to be simple. Entry boxes will be available in every participating business, so shoppers do not have to go out of their way to take part.
“You just write your name and phone number on the back of your receipt and pop it in the entry box in the store,” Belinda says.
The Spend and Win promotion has been run many times by Richmond Unlimited and continues to deliver positive results.
“Generally, especially when there’s cash, it works really well,” Raymond says. “Cash is king, and people can use it for whatever they need.”
He says that retailers also enjoy being part of the promotion, which helps create energy and activity in the town during winter.
“Outside of the events and things we run, this is probably one of the bigger promotions we do,” he says. “It’s one we’ve done for many years and we know it supports businesses and brings people into Richmond.”
Weekly winners will be published in the Waimea Weekly.
