There was plenty to crow about at the Nelson Poultry and Pigeon Association Show over the weekend.
More than 200 birds from across the Top of the South and Canterbury were at the Hope Recreation Hall, competing for ribbons after months of preparation by a flock of entrants.
In her debut, Motueka’s Elliott Orr was shell-shocked to earn a feather in her cap, with her Black Orpington taking out the best heavy breed category for being “well presented” and “well cared for”.
Elliott wasn’t cagey about sharing her reaction to the ribbon for winning bird was bred and meticulously prepared at her parents’ property since August,
“I was not expecting it, but I was very happy with the outcome. The show has been awesome,” she says.
Nelson Poultry and Pigeon Association president Peter May says that while numbers were down due to the Poultry & Pigeon National Show in Palmerston North this weekend, the event was laden with strong local support.
