The Motueka Quilting Connection exhibition is set to fill Memorial Hall with colour and creativity this month, as more than 60 brand new quilts go on display.
Member Shirley Cooper says the group is at the “all hands on deck” stage, with final touches being applied ahead of the show.
The exhibition is the result of year-round work, with organisers keen to emphasise quilting as more than a practical craft.
“It’s not just making a blanket – it is an artform,” Karen Price explains.
This year’s exhibition will feature guest exhibitors Cherie Gurney, a Christchurch-based quilting tutor, and Golden Bay’s Elva Harwood, described by the group as having been “quilting for donkey’s years”.
A highlight will be the annual challenge, with 22 entries inspired by the theme ‘Recycled’.
The group works alongside Search and Rescue volunteers, who assist with setting up the exhibition. In turn, the quilters make an annual donation to the organisation from funds raised at the event.
Now in its 30th year, the group has been running the exhibition since 2003. Alongside the quilts, visitors can enjoy trade stalls, an annual raffle, and vote in the People’s Choice award.
The exhibition runs at Memorial Hall from June 12 to 14. Entry is $5.
