Tahunanui Bowling Club was alive with players young and old as it officially opened its brand-new artificial green, marking a significant milestone in the club’s long history.
Bowls Tahunanui Inc, formerly known as Tahunanui Bowling Club, was formed in the early 1920s alongside the neighbouring tennis club. While the tennis club was established in 1921, the bowls club followed in 1922 and celebrated its centenary in 2021.
The club was first incorporated on July 29, 1940, when a small group of local enthusiasts worked on a voluntary basis to build the original bowling green. Over time a second green was added, reflecting the club’s steady growth and strong community support.
Treasurer Mike Dickie says the latest artificial green is a major investment in the future of the club and the wider Tahunanui community.
“We currently have one grass green which was completely dug up and resoiled and regrassed two years ago, and now will have a new artificial surface which will serve members and the local community for the next 15 to 20 years.”
The official opening was marked with a triples tournament on Monday, 26 May, with installers Tiger Turf also taking part in a playing capacity.
Mike says the club prides itself on being welcoming and accessible.
“We’re a very friendly lawn bowling club in Tahunanui, Nelson, catering for all levels of lawn bowling, whether you’re a beginner, social, competitive or even a non-bowling member,” he says.
Members are able to borrow a set of bowls, while casual players pay a small fee per game.
