Huge pipes installed in record time
Contractors have installed large stormwater pipes through a 79-year-old culvert in minutes on Nelson’s St Vincent Street upgrade, avoiding major excavation. The custom winch system allowed 1800mm pipes to be pulled through in five minutes, saving about $1 million and weeks of work, manager capital projects Rebecca Dawkins says. Tasman Civil installed 18 pipes using the method, developed through early contractor involvement, despite challenges including unexpected underground services and major power cables. The project remains on track for completion in late 2026.
