Nelson Suburbs is proving a Chatham Cup giantkiller for the second year running.
It has avenged an embarrassing 4-1 Southern League defeat to Nomads United at Saxton Field six weeks ago, by knocking the Christchurch side out of cup in the third round today.
Nomads had home advantage and took an 11-match unbeaten run across all competitions into the game against last year’s semi-finalists.
But Suburbs stunned the hosts with two cracking first half goals.
Centre forward Jay Anderson rounded the defence and slipped a perfect ball to Lennon Whewell who clinically beat the keeper.
And from a free kick, American midfielder Johnny Reynolds unleashed a blistering volley into the back of the net to make it 2-0 at Tulett Park.
This time there was no chance of the Suburbs defence folding and the visitors went on to win 2-0.
The fourth round draw will be made next week.
Meanwhile the Nelson Suburbs women were knocked out of the Kate Sheppard Cup, trounced 10-0 by Women’s South Island League leader Cashmere Technical.
