An old substation in central Nelson is looking very fancy, thanks to the creative minds of some young residents.
My Fancy Car is a community mural designed by local youth and now brightening a power station box on the corner of Hardy and Kerr Streets.

The project is a collaboration between Make/Shift Spaces and Arts Council Nelson, aimed at bringing more colour and creativity to the city’s streets.
Earlier this year, children aged up to 12 were invited to submit drawings showing what their dream fancy car would look like.
Arts Council Nelson community arts manager Lloyd Harwood says they received 27 entries, which were narrowed down to five finalists whose designs now feature on the substation walls.

The finalists were William Adie, Pippa Amadeo, Asher Eathorne, Elsie Gale and Flora Wonford, whose designs feature a range of imaginative ideas – including a car with a garden, a car that can travel underwater, cars with wings and even a car with a slide and pool.
The finalist artworks were reproduced in large format on the substation walls by artists Amy Adams and Millie Waters, with the mural officially opened last week.

The mural was sponsored by Bowater Motor Group, with additional support from the Nelson City Creative Communities Scheme and Network Tasman.
Arts Council Nelson thanked all the children who contributed artwork to the project.
