Local volunteers are adding fresh colour to Motueka’s Sanctuary Ponds Reserve, with new plantings set to brighten the park this spring.
Keep Motueka Beautiful coordinator Isobel Mosley says the group has spent several years developing the area bordering Goodman Reserve, establishing footpaths and replenishing flowering shrubs and bulbs.
“[It] is especially beautiful in spring with all the flowering bulbs and autumn, when all the deciduous trees turn colour.”
The group had nine volunteers at last week’s working bee, with shrubs and bulbs from Dean’s Nursery, Mitre 10, as well as from the volunteers’ own gardens.
Isobel says the group is keen to see more people make use of the park as it continues to develop.
Next on the agenda is taking down the hanging baskets from High St, which she says have lasted remarkably well this year.
“We continue to work in Thorp Bush and around the estuary with native planting.”
The group’s major project is restoring the old wharf at Motueka Quay. Fundraising has brought them close to their target to begin the first phase of the project.
