Winter warmth and local talent will take centre stage in Māpua later this month when the community’s choirs and musicians come together for an annual Solstice celebration.
The Māpua Community Choir, Māpua School Choir and local performers will present Sounds of Solstice, an evening of music and song bringing together voices and instruments from across generations.
The Māpua Community Choir programme features music from America, including gospel, musical theatre and popular songs, with one piece reflecting a wintry theme. The choir will also highlight the talents of its own members, with Jan Mitchell and Fred Haering performing classical flute and recorder duets.
The choir will be joined on stage by the Māpua School Choir for two energetic numbers, before the school presents its own musical programme.
Instrumental highlights include a trombone solo from Ian Nicholas, a long-time Māpua resident and member of the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band and Motueka District Brass Band. Ian will also perform as part of a trombone quartet alongside fellow Motueka District Brass Band members Vanessa Harris, Phoebe King and Neil Kenny.
Both the Māpua Community Choir and Māpua School are active in community events throughout the year, and performing together in this concert has become an annual tradition.
The concert will be held at the Māpua Community Hall on Thursday, 25 June, starting at 6.30pm.
Entry is by koha, with a suggested donation of $5. Cash is preferred, with EFTPOS available. Seating is limited, so early arrival is recommended.
