There’s been a changing of the guard at KartSport Nelson with Stoke’s Danny Frans assuming the commentary role.
The former speedway and go-kart driver had always wanted to become a caller and has finally got his chance after ill health prompted Gary Brown to end his 36-year career.

“You need to have someone backing you in and Brownie did that. He sat with me in the box for the first half of my first meeting. He was gracious and a good guide,” declares the plumber, drain layer and gas fitter.
79-year-old “Brownie” is confident 34-year-old Danny is the perfect replacement.
“I could see Danny looking up at me all the time from the track and I said when the time comes I will tap you on the shoulder. He has fitted into the commentary role like a glove and I am sure he will do the club proud,” says Brownie who was on hand to hear his successor call the opening round of the club’s points championship on Sunday.
It’s a big year for KartSport Nelson with the South Island go-kart champs returning to the Redwood Valley circuit in November.
