A Nelson man accused of a string of burglaries dating back to 2021 is now behind bars, police say.
The 32-year-old was arrested in Nelson and remanded in custody. He is due to appear in the Nelson District Court 14 July, facing numerous burglary charges.
Detective Sergeant Aleki Maka from Nelson Tactical Crime Unit, says police identified the local suspect while investigating his latest burglary on Washington Rd.
A search warrant executed at his home uncovered a stash of stolen items, including several expensive bicycles, flat-screen televisions, gaming consoles and controllers, power tools, garden tools, personal souvenirs, clothing and other belongings.
Further investigation linked the man to about 20 alleged burglaries reported as far back as May 2021.
Aleki says some addresses were targeted repeatedly, with more items taken on each visit and, on some occasions, notes allegedly left for victims.
Enquiries will continue to return stolen items to their rightful owners.
Tasman Police are encouraging residents to consider further ways to secure their homes and prevent burglaries.
- Make sure you lock all gates, doors and windows, even if you are away briefly. Window stays and lock bolts are inexpensive to install and can help prevent theft.
- Store valuables out of sight and locked away.
- Engrave tools or notable appliances with your name and record serial numbers.
- Consider installing sensor lighting, alarms or CCTV.
- Get to know your neighbours. Keeping an eye out for each other can help prevent crime in your area.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is urged to call 111 immediately. For non-emergencies, report through 105, either online or by phone.
