Hundreds of volunteer hours, countless supporters and one simple goal have helped turn Kids N Rigs into one of the region's most anticipated family events. This month's Local Legends feature recognises the dedicated organising team behind the free community truck show, whose passion has created a day of fun for families and raising thousands of dollars for deserving local causes.
The idea first came from organiser Darren Letham, who wanted to create a free event that showcased the trucking industry while giving something back to the community. Since then, fellow organisers Tamara Quinn, Grant Wilkins, Chris Webby and Olivia Pomeroy have joined forces, investing hundreds of hours to bring the event to life.
Held at the Richmond A&P Showgrounds, Kids N Rigs is a family event that showcases an impressive display of trucks, and something for everyone including truck rides, entertainment, face painting, bouncy castles and food stalls. For the organisers, the biggest reward is seeing the joy the event brings, and seeing the smiles on the kids and adults faces at the show is what keeps them going.
They also love supporting well-deserved local recipients and creating awareness around the transport industry. For them, there’s nothing more rewarding than hearing a child jump into a truck and say, 'I want to be a truck driver.' Moments like those remind them that the event is making a real difference.
Since it began, Kids N Rigs has donated $7,000 to the Child Cancer Foundation, $10,000 to Rilee Wright, and $10,000 to Nelson Hospital's Special Care Baby Unit, with the 2027 recipients to be announced soon.
The organisers are quick to share the recognition, thanking the many businesses, truck drivers, volunteers, employers, friends and families whose generosity and hard work make Kids N Rigs possible.
