Waimea Combined Schools First XV delivered a clinical performance in Christchurch on Saturday, overpowering Rolleston College 57–17 after a focused week refining their attack.
Rolleston, previously part of Selwyn Combined in the Premiership division, is rebuilding in the Tier 2 grade this year. Despite being winless, the home side had pushed top teams close, leaving Waimea wary ahead of the clash.
That caution proved short-lived as Waimea asserted control early and never let go.
Loose forward Melvyn Barbier set the tone within minutes, crashing over for the opening try. His physical presence stood out all game, with strong carries and work rate, helped by light-hearted motivation from teammates referencing his French heritage and a major match later that day.
Waimea led 33–nil at halftime and maintained their intensity after the break. When Rolleston had chances, they were met by strong defence, particularly from loose forward Blake Judge and replacement hooker Regan Thomson.
The trip also allowed valuable game time for wider squad members. Garin College lock Bathlia Dissanyake impressed in the lineout, while Waimea College halfback Jacob Heal made his debut and received his Waimea Combined tie post-match.
Waimea Combined now sits sixth on the table with three regular-season games remaining, all against teams below them. Securing maximum points will be crucial as they push for a higher finish ahead of the top-six knockout stage.
The side’s next Miles Toyota Championship fixture is against Roncalli Aoraki Combined First XV in Richmond on Saturday, 25 July. Before that, they return to action this Friday at Sports Park Motueka, hosting Aotea College from Wellington, with kick-off at 2pm.
