Golden Bay-Motueka has impressed at the 90th annual Seddon Shield Under 52kg Primary School Rugby Tournament in Greymouth, delivering a week of determined, high-quality rugby against the region’s best young players.
Held from Sunday, 6 July, to Thursday, 10 July, the tournament once again showcased why it remains New Zealand’s longest-running and most prestigious primary school representative rugby event.
Teams from Golden Bay-Motueka, Nelson, Marlborough, Buller and the West Coast competed in five days of fast-paced rugby, strong sportsmanship and memorable moments for those selected to represent their regions.
Golden Bay-Motueka can be proud of its efforts, with players showing resilience, skill and strong teamwork throughout the tournament, both on and off the field.
Marlborough were deserved winners of this year’s event, with consistent and skilful performances across the week securing the title in this milestone 90th tournament.
A highlight for Golden Bay-Motueka was claiming the newly-introduced Sturgeon-Shand Trophy, contested annually against Nelson. The trophy recognises long-serving coaches George Sturgeon, who has dedicated 31 years to Golden Bay-Motueka, and Chris Shand, who has coached Nelson for 26 years. Their contributions have helped sustain the rich traditions of the Seddon Shield, and the trophy ensures their legacy will continue to be acknowledged.
Golden Bay-Motueka also celebrated the selection of five players in the tournament team: Tamai Goldsworthy, Zeke Mannering, Sorren Arnott, Pedro Prouting and James McDougall.
The success of representative rugby relies on more than the players alone. Thanks go to coaches, management, families and supporters who give their time and energy to support the team, as well as the West Coast Rugby Union for hosting the tournament and the referees, officials and volunteers who helped deliver a memorable week.
Looking ahead, the 91st Seddon Shield Under 52kg Primary School Rugby Tournament will be held in Westport in July 2027.
Taking a representative team away each year relies on the support of local businesses and community sponsors, helping cover uniforms, equipment, travel and accommodation so every selected player can take part.
