Capturing the moment a cicada emerges from its old skin won the top children’s prize in this year’s Māpua amateur photographic competition which attracted a record 216 entries.
The work of 48 entrants is now on display in the 2026 Māpua Maritime Museum Amateur Photographic Competition exhibition on the Māpua Wharf until 2 August.
Among the winning images is Tasman youngster, Arlo Willets’ photo of the emerging cicada, which took out the overall children’s award. Judges Jane Smith of Chocolate Dog Studio Māpua and Jamie Brown from CopyArt say the standard of entry was higher than last year, making judging even harder.
A 2027 Māpua calendar featuring some of the photos from the competition will be on sale at the prizegiving on the final day of the exhibition, and then from Delicious Homewares.
