The Redwood Valley Hall has been many things since it began life in 1887, and now it is about to become home to a weekly farmers and makers market.
Dave Woolf, who has long been involved with music and markets around the region, thought the hall on the Moutere Highway was the perfect setting for a country market and set out to make it happen.
After months of planning, the Redwood Valley Market kicks off this Saturday, 8 August, with local produce, handmade goods, art, second-hand treasures, as well as food and live music.
“We’ve got a keen bunch of people, with a lot living quite close and they like the idea of using the hall – it’s a beautiful old hall,” he says. “I’m hoping to create a relaxed, welcoming market with a strong community atmosphere.”
Dave’s experience with markets comes from selling his artwork and performing music. His latest project combines the two by restoring second-hand drum kits into colourful works of functional art.
The market’s inaugural stallholders will offer an eclectic mix of produce and art, from relishes and home baking, to jewellery, paintings and pottery. While the hall will house produce and handmade goods, Dave sees the outdoor area as ideal for car boot and second-hand stalls, alongside food carts.
Weekly live performances will begin with Motueka Valley singer-songwriter Shoney, whose soulful voice blends familiar favourites with her own original material.
Dave’s long-term vision is for a changing lineup of musicians and entertainers at the weekly market and eventually other attractions such as theatre, magicians, jugglers, a bouncy castle and other family activities added over time.
By combining the historic country hall, local makers and live music, he hopes the market will grow organically and become a destination in its own right.
“Somewhere people come not simply to buy something, but to spend their Saturday morning, meet people and enjoy themselves.”
Alongside stallholders already signed up for the first market, he would like to hear from produce and plant growers, and more local makers. Second-hand and car-boot sellers are also welcome. The market will run between 10am and 1pm at the hall on 484 Moutere Highway.
