Nelson Junction suspended automatic park monitoring
Due to ongoing issues with the car park monitoring system at Nelson Junction, automatic monitoring has been suspended. The management team says if you have received a parking infringement notice and believe it was issued unfairly, please contact Parking Enforcement Services immediately to have the infringement reviewed and waived. Management thanked customers for their patience and understanding while the matter is being resolved.
Solar upgrades for Nelson and Tasman schools
The Government has identified 500 schools across the country to benefit from its $30 million solar panel programme. Nine Nelson schools – Nelson College, Birchwood, Broadgreen Intermediate, Clifton Terrace, Hampden Street, Nayland Primary, Nelson Central, Nelson Intermediate, and Stoke – are part of the first tranche. Eight Tasman schools – Waimea College, Appleby, Brightwater, Motueka High, Riwaka, Tākaka, Tapawera Area, and Wakefield are also included. The schools were selected because they are experiencing energy or fuel insecurity, facing higher energy costs, are scheduled for gas or diesel boiler replacements, or have a need for greater energy resilience.
Tāhuna holiday park wins three national awards
Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park has won three honours at the Holiday Parks New Zealand Conference and Expo in Hamilton. The holiday park received the Sustainable Commitment Award for five years of initiatives including solar energy, waste reduction, composting and native plant restoration. It also won the Community Engagement Award for programmes such as the Giants Experience in schools’ initiative and the Tāhunanui Beach Clean-Up, as well as its long-standing connection with the community. The Large Park Improvement Award recognised upgrades to the accessible units garden and deck area, including sensory plantings designed to improve outdoor accessibility and comfort.
Hearing House to host Age Concern
Age Concern Nelson Tasman has secured a new Nelson office at Hearing House, 354 Trafalgar Square. The organisation says the move follows strong community support after the closure of its previous Nelson office. The new premises will include office space, a client meeting room and a function room for workshops, community activities, information sessions and other programmes. They are currently preparing the site and expect to open to the public in early October. Details on opening hours, services and programmes will be announced in September.
Community ice pond damaged
The ice-skating pond near St Arnaud has been unusable after visitors repeatedly smashed the edges of the pond and threw rocks onto the frozen surface. The pond, which occasionally freezes enough for skating during winter, is currently unsuitable for ice skating despite recent freezing temperatures. Ski Sisters, who hire out skates for the pond, say the ice has been covered in rocks and broken ice after people threw objects onto it and swung on the skating bars, breaking the ice beneath them. “We are super gutted,” they said.
