A chilly new fundraiser is encouraging Nelson Tasman residents to brave cold water in support of the Cancer Society.
The Daffy Dip campaign launched on Saturday with council representatives, political candidates and community supporters leading by example.
As Daffodil Day approaches, the local Cancer Society is finding new ways to support its biggest annual fundraiser.
On Saturday, the organisation launched the Daffy Dip fundraiser, with Nelson and Tasman council representatives, political candidates and other supporters diving into the chilly sea on Haven Rd.
The Tasman team arrived dressed for the occasion in bright yellow banana suits, while the entire group wore vibrant yellow Daffy Caps.
Now the wider community is being challenged to take its own plunge in support of the Cancer Society's work.
“Demand for our services has continued to grow, and in total our team supported more than 670 clients and whānau during the past year,” a Cancer Society Nelson Tasman spokesperson says.
Taking place throughout August, and especially on Daffodil Day on Friday, 28 August, Daffy Dip offers community groups a fun and flexible way to raise funds for free cancer support services, practical help, accommodation, transport to treatment and cancer research.
Participants can register, share their challenge with friends and whānau, raise funds and then take the plunge wherever suits them. Options range from ocean swims and lake dips to paddling pool shinny-dips or a cold plunge at the gym.
Those keen to dip in style can kickstart their fundraising with a $48 self-donation when registering and receive a limited-edition Daffy Cap while stocks last.
This year, more than 10,000 daffodils are expected to be picked locally, adding to the 450,000-500,000 picked nationwide.
Last year's Daffodil Day campaign saw the Nelson Tasman community raise more than $140,000 to help fund Cancer Society services and support local people facing cancer.
This year, organisers hope the community will once again rally behind Daffodil Day and build on last year's "incredible result".
