Network Tasman is nearing completion of a $1.5 million transformer replacement at its Haven Road substation, strengthening electricity supply for thousands of Nelson homes, businesses and essential services.
The new transformer replaces a unit that suffered a major fault in August 2024 and is part of Network Tasman's ongoing investment in essential network infrastructure.
The transformer has a capacity of 16/24MVA and converts electricity from 33kV to 11kV for distribution through the local network. It is expected to support a reliable electricity supply in Nelson as demand grows across the region.
Network Tasman chief executive Oliver Kearney says the project demonstrates the company's commitment to providing a safe, resilient and reliable electricity network for local consumers.
"A secure electricity network is critical to the well-being and prosperity of our region. This investment helps ensure Nelson continues to have the reliable electricity supply our community depends on every day."
Installing the transformer is a significant engineering project. The transformer weighs about 47.5 tonnes, while the heaviest individual lift is 36 tonnes. Installation requires a 350-tonne mobile crane supported by 116 tonnes of crane counterweights.
The transformer replaces the original Transformer 3, which was commissioned in 2014.
Oliver says the project is part of a much wider programme of network investment across the region.
"Our region continues to grow, and the way we use electricity is changing as more consumers adopt technologies such as electric vehicles and solar generation. Continued investment in the network is needed to support those changes while maintaining the reliability our consumers expect."

The new transformer is expected to be commissioned in early October following installation and testing work at the substation.
