It was Sunday, the morning of the annual Daffodil Rally for Cancer Show & Shine and the weather threatened to wither the crowds and their donations with it.
But both critical seeds for the popular fundraiser to blossom showed no signs of slowing down, with hundreds turning out to Nelson Speedway, marvelling at the 353 pride and joys parked up by Nelson Tasman classic and vintage car clubs and the general public.
$12,605, accumulated through raffles, donations and $10 gate entry fees on the day is a welcome boost for Cancer Society Nelson Tasman.
Ensuring the event’s pleasant journey was the Nelson Vintage Car Club (NVCC) and MS Ford Nelson.
In the organising seat again this year was NVCC vice-captain Dianne Lewis, who says revving up local funds for local cancer support was the driver.
“I don't think there's anybody in the community that hasn't been touched by cancer,” she says.
“I'd like to thank the community so much, it’s just amazing that people support it.”
Up to 90 vehicles also took part in the event's curtain-raiser, the Moutere Hop Team's Cruise, which departed from the Moutere Hills Recreation Centre.
While the entry fee was $15, which included admission to the Show & Shine, some participants handed organisers $20 with a firm “keep the change”.
