From wing to wing attack, there was simply no stopping Jess Drummond in rugby and netball club showpieces.
Waimea teams were on the receiving end both times as the former Richmond school teacher highlighted her versatility, leading Jacks OPD to win Saturday’s Nelson premier netball final after starring for Kahurangi in its rugby title romp in July.
Jess had played centre in both codes earlier in the season but switched to wing attack when her longtime friend and former teammate Charlotte Drummond joined Jacks towards the end of the netball campaign.
“Winning the double was a first for me. It was history-making and pretty cool,” enthuses Jess, after Jacks overwhelmed Waimea Prices Ahurei 61-39.
“It was an unreal performance from our team, from our defence getting turnovers through to our midcourt and shooters.
"We didn’t want Prices to get a three-peat, for sure. That title was one thing we really wanted,” says Jess.
The Riwaka sportswoman confirms she had been approached by the Tasman Mako Women about her availability to return to the Farah Palmer Cup competition this season.
She was a Mako original in 2017, the year she received a sevens call-up for New Zealand.
“They did ask me before the rugby trial, saying they would be keen to have me, but the commitment was too hard with my two beautiful young girls,” reveals Jess.
“But if they have injury problems, of course I would step in.”
The Tasman Mako Women opens its campaign against Northland on Saturday afternoon at Trafalgar Park.
