A wet Trusts Stadium in Henderson was the scene of a high school union for former Nelson College rugby stars Harry Inch and Tom Perkins at the weekend.
2024 1st XV captain Harry, and Tom, who led the side last season, both began their professional rugby league careers this year in the New South Wales Rugby League junior competition – the Jersey Flegg Cup.
Harry had been mostly guiding the Warriors from five-eighth, but played at loose forward for the final round match against Tom’s Newcastle Knights side.
The second rower had missed the team’s clash earlier in the season when the Warriors won 44-6 in Newcastle.
But it was a different story on Saturday as Tom got his league team away to a flier in Auckland.
He scored the opening try in the fourth minute and provided the offload for the second just two minutes later.
The Knights raced to a 32-0 lead before the Warriors scored two late tries with Harry adding a conversion in the 32-10 loss.
Both players were very solid in defence in the testing conditions.
While the Brightwater product was a fixture in the Warriors junior side for the 26-round competition, Tom made his debut from the interchange in round six and started the last five games in the second row.
The Jersey Flegg Cup is a stepping-stone to the NRL first grade competition, which the Warriors currently lead.
