A community market packed with bargains, baking, plants and produce will help local Scout groups fund their next adventures.
The Brightwater Scouts market will be held from 10am-2pm on Saturday, 19 September, at the Brightwater Scouts Den, Charlotte Lane, Brightwater, rain or shine.
Shoppers can expect a wide range of stalls selling baking, plants, produce, toys, clothing, handcrafts, gifts and bric-a-brac. A barbecue, snacks and raffles will also be available.
The event gives the community a chance to connect with local Scouts while helping Keas, Cubs and Scouts raise funds for activities and adventures throughout the year.
For nine Scouts from Brightwater and Riwaka, however, the fundraising comes with an extra goal in mind.
The group is working towards attending the New Zealand Scout Jamboree, which begins on 27 December at Mystery Creek, Hamilton.
Group leader Jezz Dunlea says she would love to see the community come out in force to support the youth, who have been working hard to not only raise money but also to earn the required badges to qualify for Jamboree across categories such as tramping, camping and emergency services.
The market itself is also an important learning opportunity.
Jezz says the young people are responsible for planning and running the event, organising everything from tables and signage to power supplies and stock.
Each of the nine Jamboree-bound Scouts needs to raise more than $3500 to cover flights, food and activities during the 10-day event. The market is one of many fundraisers the group has taken on this year.
“The Scouts have been humbled by the incredible support and encouragement they have received so far,” Jezz says.
The nine Scouts, including two members of the Riwaka troop, have also set up a Givealittle page to help get them over the line before they head north in December.
