An upgraded Maitai Valley walkway has officially opened as part of Nelson’s $9 million flood mitigation project.
The walkway, located between Clouston Bridge and Hanby Park, was christened on 9 September by Nelson Mayor Nick Smith, Nelson City councillors and local residents.
The upgrade forms part of wider works designed to improve the Maitai River’s ability to safely carry floodwaters through the city.
The project combines new floodwalls with stopbank upgrades to increase protection during major flood events. The latest stage of the work is designed to manage peak river flows of about 380 cubic metres per second.
The $9 million project includes $5.4 million in funding from the Government’s Regional Infrastructure Fund, administered by Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit.
