Around 60 paddleboarders, kayakers and some seated in kayaks rolled in with the “extra high king tide” for a languid morning on “the jewel of Nelson.”
World Rivers Day’s annual paddle on the Maitai River on Sunday, led by Nelson City Council and Nelson Harbourmaster, was not only a fun day on the water, but an appreciation for its beauty above and below, and why everyone who uses it must paddle the waka for its preservation. NCC environmental programmes adviser Emma Reeves, who was riverside, says the activities at the launchpad near the Maitai Walkway also propelled that message.
She hoped participants' learnings wouldn’t stay on shore but would apply on the river, helping preserve it for future generations.
