The performers of Firebird Circus will deliver a unique performance at Motueka’s Memorial Hall this Saturday, as the acrobats take to the floor – and the air.
The Forgotten Element is written by Ngātimoti's Beck Salmi, who will perform alongside the four classes she teaches.
Beck says the show celebrates a connection to the four elements and "the wholeness with ourselves".
Representing the grounding nature of earth, the flow of water, the transformation of fire and the freedom of air, the story follows Beck on her journey to find the forgotten element as the forces intertwine.
Performers will use aerial hoops and silks suspended from the hall's ceiling, with up to 10 people airborne at any one time during the hour-long show.
The 33 performers, ranging from children to adults, will also use ribbons, silk fans, acrobatics and dance to tell the story. Beck says the Memorial Hall's stage depth provides the ideal space for a three-dimensional performance.
Beck studied at CircoArts in Christchurch in 2010 and believes circus has always been about bringing the community together.
"It's going to be amazing," she says of the performance. "It's going to be one of our best pieces."
